Theseus of Yore “Zeus” - 16.1hh, 2017, gelding, knabstrupper, appaloosa
The most perfect riding club horse with potential to go up the levels showjumping or eventing. I purchased Zeus over a year ago from a mainly happy hacking home so is very low mileage for his age. In this time he has progressed to competing and winning (69%) at novice level dressage, jumping 1m courses and 90cm xc. Well established flatwork, working in a consistent and light contact, good knowledge of lateral movements in trot, beginning to pick up the same in canter. Very scopey jump, Zeus likes a supportive leg to the jump without being lazy, never strong, very confidence giving into a fence and good at sorting his striding out, not spooky showjumping. Zeus has seen xc jumps 5 times. 2x schooling, 2x unaffiliated ode at Todburn and 1x schooling over BE80 fences at Alnwick ford. He has had a couple of stops during our xc outings, not sharp or dirty and gives you plenty of warning, has a look then happily pops next time round. I feel his confidence has grown every time he’s been out and for his relative greenness in this area he is generally pretty bold and brave.
Can be a little looky in new arenas, not at jumps or dressage boards but at surroundings, once he’s had a look first time round he tends to ignore from then on. Never sharp or spins etc. More susceptible to atmosphere than fillers etc. The only time I’ve had a negative outing with him was taking him to Scone arena eventing where he was totally over fazed and just had no brain capacity left to jump anything. Totally my fault and had I known how central and busy the arena was I never would have gone as he’s never experienced anything even slightly similar in terms of scale. Have since been building on this more slowly and recently represented my riding club as part of showjumping teams at SNEC where there was a fairly busy atmosphere and he was unfazed.
Great to hack alone or in company. I tend to hack completely off road but ridden him a bit on the road, likes a wee look at a road sign but fine with traffic. Never strong or ever considers taking a hold. Remains how he rides everywhere else, likes a little leg there but not lazy or numb. Loves and is very comfortable and relaxed in company. Loves clinics and hacks with a buddy, great meeting new horses when hacking with strangers away from home etc. Regularly ride my mare and lead him and he’s perfectly behaved. Used as a nanny out hacking and is a great influence.
Much to me and my previously dominate mares shock Zeus is the boss in the field although he is extremely calm and gentle about it. Just quietly states his authority and takes no nonsense. Currently turned out with all others mares, previously mixed. Although never riggy he is quite protective of his girls so I think he would possibly have a tussle if turned out with mares and another more dominant gelding. Generally super meeting new horses. I have used him a lot to help settle horses I’ve had to back in by putting him next door and never a drama meeting new friends. Currently in at night but previously been out 24. Quite likes coming into his bed and likes his food. Comes to call at the gate.
No vices and good in all ways. Up to date with teeth and vaccines. Not sedated for anything. Shod all round with excellent feet, has never pulled a shoe with me. I can happily leave him in for any health professional and am confident he’ll be fine for them to help themselves.
Gentlemen to handle in all ways, very respectful of space. Great to trailer, I go most places myself and he waits patiently in the trailer for me to walk courses etc. can also leave him tied to the side without a drama. Currently travels in herringbone trailer but has faced forwards and been in lorries too.
Wears a fly sheet and mask in the summer to prevent sunburn. Gets his eyes wiped with a damp cloth every time I groom him. Has previously been on piritin to prevent weepy eyes when turned out next to oil seed rape. Currently lives on a livestock farm and has no problem with allergies. Fairly good keeper, currently on a high oil chaff and pony nuts. Was fully vetted and had back and hing limb X-rays before I bought him which were all clean.
Type of horse that would suit most people due to ridability. Only person he wouldn’t suit is someone who is extremely nervous or high energy as he can internalise individuals energy and while his behaviour doesn’t change he finds this a little worrying. Extremely goofy and funny horse to have around. Nicest person, always tries his best to please and is very loving.
Very sad sale only motivated by older mares health concerns becoming more financially draining and I can no longer justify keeping him. Length of post due to trying to find him the perfect, long term home.
