Shire Cross
Chunky Weight Carrier
Jet Black, 6yrs, mare
Astrid is a stunning Jet black Shire Cross with a big heart and a loving sole currently working in a riding school by intermediate level and above riders, although still green in the school, she is a genuine blank canvas with a lovely, willing and trainable nature. She is beginning to understand his flatwork, canters on the correct leg, and is learning to maintain balance and straightness. She is confident over poles and small obstacles and always tries her best; never sharp, spooky or silly, simply straightforward and eager to learn. With a more competent rider, she will work into a soft outline and is already showing promising development in suppleness, balance and responsiveness to the leg, including the early stages of lateral work.
She is wonderfully safe and sensible, naturally more whoa than go. If a rider loses balance or stirrups, she will quietly come back to walk without being asked, making him incredibly forgiving and confidence-building for riders with less knowledge.
She has a big, genuine heart and learns quickly. Despite not having done extensive arena work, she puts his heart and soul into everything asked of her. Her slow and steady outlook on life, paired with her calm, unflappable temperament, means nothing much phases her.
Her experience has been primarily trekking and hacking, and this is where she truly shines. She will happily plod along on a loose rein and look after his rider in any environment, making her a super kind, uncomplicated type for someone who wants to put their own stamp on a genuine, honest horse. She is most definitely a sturdy sure footed mare with a leg in each corner.
She does not fizz up, spook, shy, rush, pull or behave in a silly manner. Her chilled, steady temperament remains the same wherever she goes.
Astrid hacks in the heaviest of traffic without batting an eyelid, waiting politely at junctions without moving, staying rock-solid as lorries, buses, tractors, trailers, motorbikes and farm machinery pass closely by. Open fields are no problem either; she has impeccable manners in open spaces and has cantered and gently galloped on grass verges beside busy roads. In a group, she is happy leading, in the middle or at the back, never pulling or trying to overtake if anything, she sometimes needs reminding to keep up!
She also hacks out alone with complete confidence and a mature, ladylike attitude. Absolutely nothing seems to faze her, making her an ideal partner for someone wanting a reliable, safe and genuine horse who will give confidence and enjoy life at a steady pace.
Astrid can be ridden every now and again and have the same chilled out attitude as when ridden daily.
She is excellent catch, load, travel, bath, clip, groom, farrier, dentist, vet.
She absolutely loves to be pampered, she will stand all day without a head collar and lead rope whilst being groomed, bathed, cuddled and fussed over.
She stands quite happily in her stable eating her hay with the door open, never attempting to walk out unless asked.
She gets lead, caught and handled by the smallest of children, she is quite happy being dragged around the yard on the end of a lead rope.
She will stand at a mounting block without moving until mounted, regardless of how long it takes.
Snaffle mouth with absolutely no gadgets.
She is currently stabled during the day and out at night within a mixed herd, she is equally happy to be stabled or turned out full time, she keeps herself to herself and never causes any trouble despite being out with 30 other horses.
She isn’t clingy or marish in any way and is happy being stable and or turned out solo.
Astid will give confidence to any rider/ handler and could easily compete at riding club level, fun/beach rides.
She can go for months without work then be tacked up and ridden without any fuss, she is extremely low maintenance, she maintains her weight all year round on grass and hay and Haylage during the winter months.
She has never been lame had laminitis, sweet-itch or sarcoids.
In the whole time I have her I can honestly say she has never been lame, sick or sorry, my vet can verify this, she has passed the riding school annual inspections with flying colours, this is equivalent to a stage 2 vetting.
