Ruby is an eight-year-old roan bay mare Dartmoor Hill Pony, standing at approximately 120 cm. She is a genuine child’s pony – excellent on the lead rein but is also a good second/first pony. She is my granddaughter’s best friend and is much loved.
Heartbreaking sale owing to my unexpected health issues. Ideally seeking a knowledgeable home where Ruby can enjoy a range of activities with a new best friend and fulfil her promise as a fun, all-round, pony club type pony.
We have owned Ruby since August 2022, straight from her excellent breaking in by Tara Morris Equestrian. On the lead rein, Ruby carries small children with care. She responds to verbal instructions to walk, trot, whoa, and stand. In the last couple of years, she’s been ridden mainly by my eldest granddaughter as the other two have lost interest. Ruby is only ridden in the school holidays when my granddaughter comes to stay. After each six-week gap, Ruby does not need to be ridden by an adult or lunged – just a quick brush, tack on, and out we go. Ruby loves hacking and is happy to go in front or behind. I have also led her from my horse a couple of times. Ruby is very good with traffic on our local roads/lanes, including noisy farm vehicles, sometimes giving my horse a lead past some ‘monstrous’ vehicle! She is sensible on bridleway tracks and in open spaces.
Ruby has been to a few local shows, taking part successfully in leading rein ridden classes and gymkhana races. My granddaughter is learning to jump. She and Ruby have competed in a few classes on and off the lead rein. Ruby is less enthusiastic and relatively inexperienced in flat work in an arena and, given the chance, can drift towards the exit!
Ruby is a very good doer. She lives on a nearly bare paddock with hay or haylage provided at regular intervals during the day/at night. She has never had laminitis, nor has she ever been sick or sorry. She lives out generally though I tend to bring her in at night during bad weather in winter to let her dry off from the rain and to get her out of the mud. She is barefoot with fantastic feet. She is good with the farrier and dentist, and is up to date with teeth, feet and vaccines. Ruby is easy to catch, and she loads and travels well in our horsebox. My granddaughter does everything with her, such as grooming, picking up her feet, tacking up, and loading in the horsebox. She does not kick or bite. She is good with dogs.
Ruby is a pretty pony who changes colour with the seasons. She is bay roan in summer, a rich red bay in winter and nearly white with black points in the spring.
