I’m certain Dougal is going to be a top class event/competition pony in the future, and I’m sure I’m probably going to regret selling him and not keeping him for my children, but I can’t keep them all!
Dougal is the sweetest, most straightforward pony, with 3 correct paces, and the most amazing jump. He schools reasonably well on the flat, although this would definitely be his weakest phase. He jumps anything you point him at, fillers, ditches, water, skinnies etc without any hesitation, and finds the jumping phase easy. He is forward going, but snaffle mouthed and responsive. Whilst Dougal is very straightforward, he is a switched on competition pony, and is used to being ridden correctly with the leg/seat aids, so wouldn’t suit a child that isn’t able to ride independently of their seat/hands. I feel like he would be best suited to a small jockey aged 13+ who wants a seriously competitive competition pony!
Dougal hacks well alone and in company, is good in traffic, and is regularly used to babysit the breakers as he’s so reliable.
He has the sweetest temperament in the stable, is easy to catch, box, shoe, clip, pull his mane, bath.
Dougal has been successfully jumping double clears and being placed in GoBE 80s, and just competed in his first BE90 at Northallerton, having an unlucky pole but a foot perfect clear xc (around a course that caused it’s fair share of problems) to finish in 10th place. I would expect Dougal to be jumping around BE100s by the end of the season with the right jockey.
I am fairly certain I am going to regret selling him, but my children are still a few years off being ready for him and I think he needs to be out having fun with a capable young jockey.
He does have mild sweet itch, which is currently well controlled with a rug. He also has splints which don’t affect him in any way, but he wouldn’t be suitable as a show pony.
