“Pony” (That’s her name!)
13hh approx
15YO (2011)
Pony has taken our children from never sitting on a horse to galloping across the beach solo! She is ridden by toddlers on the lead rein and has taught them from the lead to being an incredible first ridden hack for them.
She’s the type that isn’t upset by wobbly riders, will lift up her head to plonk children back in the saddle and is forgiving on learning hands.
She leads from another horse, hacks out in front or behind and is used to riding in heavy traffic. The children canter her through open fields, ride up main town streets and explore woodland tracks. She is hacked alone by a lightweight novice adult rider. Pony has been totally unphased by dogs joining her on her rides!
We have only ever used pony as a hack, she will politely walk, trot & canter around the arena with a novice child but that’s the extent of her school work with us as the children only have an interest in riding around the countryside!! She has trotted over tiny cross poles giving our children their first experience of jumping but they’ve sadly outgrown her before they can progress further therefore we haven’t done any jumping with her.
Can be lead around by toddlers, is good to handle and be around, she has a kind temperament, we allow the children in the stable with her without concern.
She’s brilliant to shoe, a bit of a monkey to clip but that’s something we’ve found completely insignificant as the way she looks after the children outweighs it all!
She does have mild sweet itch, It’s very manageable with the yearly injections and she only requires a rug when the flies are bad (which she will come with.)
We haven’t had the opportunity to see more from Pony as a second ridden as we don’t have a skilled lightweight rider - so please don’t ask if she’d be suitable for pony club etc as we can’t honestly tell you the answer having not done it with us. What we do know is she’s been BRILLIANT fun for our children and she’s taught them how to ride and they’ve learnt all their stable management from her!
Lives in or out, hasn’t had any issues with laminitis.
Home is VERY important for this much loved pony.
