Dennis – 12-Year-Old Black Cob Gelding – Safe, Steady and Much Loved ❤️
Dennis is a handsome black cob gelding, 12 years old, with the sweetest nature and a heart of gold. He has been part of our family for the past 3½ years, having been bought for my daughter when she was 9. Sadly, she has now outgrown him and is ready to take the next step, so we are looking for a loving new home where Dennis can be enjoyed as much as he has been by us.
Dennis is a genuine, safe and steady pony with far more whoa than go. He is incredibly kind, sensible and takes great care of his riders, making him a lovely choice for a beginner, a nervous rider, a family or someone looking for a reliable all-rounder.
Hacking is where Dennis really shines! He absolutely loves getting out and about and is happy to hack alone or in company. We regularly enjoy exploring the woods, cantering through the countryside and having a good gallop out hacking. He remains sensible and level-headed, never silly or fizzy, and does not buck. To reach our hacking routes, we have to walk along a very busy, fast-moving road and pass tractors and farm machinery, all of which Dennis takes completely in his stride. He is not at all spooky and is equally happy hacking with me on foot.
Dennis has been enjoyed in so many ways during his time with us. He has done lead-rein with my 4-year-old, jumping shows up to 60cm, Pony Club activities and, most recently, a musical ride where he was dressed up and took it all in his stride!
He has weekly flatwork lessons and has recently returned to jumping. Although he isn't going to win any showjumping championships, he is honest and genuine, never refusing or stopping at a fence. He isn't phased by different types of jumps, including water and fillers, and will steadily trot or canter towards them, always looking after his rider. My daughter has even built a little cross-country course in the fields at home, which Dennis happily negotiates in his own calm and steady way.
In June 2024, Dennis sustained a tear to his annular ligament and underwent surgery to repair it. The surgery was successful, and he was gradually brought back into work three months later. He has remained sound since. His history is mentioned openly so that his next home can make an informed decision.
On the ground, Dennis is just as lovely. He is a true leg in each corner type and is happy living in or out. He currently lives in a mixed herd and is easy to manage in every way. He is barefoot, with strong, healthy hooves, but is equally happy to be shod. He is excellent to catch and bath, and is fantastic for the farrier, vet and dentist.
Dennis doesn't need to be ridden every day and can have weeks off before returning to work without any fuss. He maintains his condition all year round on a simple diet, making him an easy and uncomplicated pony to keep.
My daughter is currently riding her new pony and so Dennis is a little unfit, this will obviously improve with regular work. He would make a wonderful addition to a family looking for a safe, loving and versatile pony, a beginner wanting confidence, or someone who simply wants a dependable happy hacker to enjoy the countryside with.
He has been a much-loved member of our family, and finding him the right home is incredibly important to us. He has so much to offer the right person and deserves a home where he will be loved and appreciated.
