Meet Matty, a charming and genuine 4-year-old bay gelding standing at 14.2hh – with a lovely, solid stamp and presence. While Matty shares that easy-going cob nature, he’s very much his own pony, with a slightly more forward and responsive feel under saddle, making him a fun and rewarding ride for someone wanting a confident giving pony.

He’s been a pleasure to produce so far, taking everything in his stride with maturity beyond his years. Whether it’s hacking out, flatwork, or popping a jump, Matty gives things a go with a willing attitude and a kind heart.

On the ground, he’s a joy to handle – respectful, easy to lead, and very affectionate without being pushy. He loves a fuss, happily stands for grooming, and is always up for a cuddle or scratch. In the stable or the field, Matty is straightforward and polite, settling quickly into routine and making friends with everyone.

Under saddle, Matty goes in a snaffle and has a soft, balanced way of going. He’s responsive yet safe, with just the right amount of go – ideal for someone who wants something that listens but doesn’t get strong or sharp. He’s proving to be confident over fences, showing scope and a natural ability that would lend itself well to Pony Club, riding club, or fun outings. He’s happily jumping small courses and has schooled over logs, ditches, water, and banks without hesitation.

Matty hacks out sensibly both alone and in company, is used to farm traffic, and has seen a variety of environments. He’s good to catch, box, shoe, and clip.

He’d be a brilliant partner for someone looking to build confidence, enjoy low-pressure fun, or bring on a kind, uncomplicated cob with plenty of potential. He could easily turn his hoof to anything – from happy hacking to low-level competition, and everything in between.

Cookie has been slowly and correctly produced, and he’s proving to be a really smart, willing pony with a very sweet nature. One of the main issues that RDA groups face is finding an Equine to suit the needs of the participants in their group.

We are regularly contacted with offers of Equines that are ‘the ideal RDA horse or pony’ when actually what is ideal for one group may not be for the next. We are trying to move away from the stereotypical view that RDA Equines are elderly and somewhat static, our horses and ponies need to be fit, healthy and athletic to cope with the lifestyle in an RDA group.

They can range from smaller, forward going ponies to weight carrying cobs and can take part in a range of disciplines from Riding to Carriage Driving, Vaulting to Show Jumping and Endurance.

If you contact an RDA Group about your Equine please be prepared to fill in an Equine Initial Interest Form which will ask you many questions about your horses’ temperament, health history, experience and lifestyle. Many groups will prefer to have an equine on trial to make sure they are suitable for the job.

For long term loans and purchases they will also be required to have a Pre-Purchase Examination.
