One of the main issues that RDA groups face is finding an Equine to suit the needs of the participants in their group.

We are regularly contacted with offers of Equines that are ‘the ideal RDA horse or pony’ when actually what is ideal for one group may not be for the next. We are trying to move away from the stereotypical view that RDA Equines are elderly and somewhat static, our horses and ponies need to be fit, healthy and athletic to cope with the lifestyle in an RDA group.

They can range from smaller, forward going ponies to weight carrying cobs and can take part in a range of disciplines from Riding to Carriage Driving, Vaulting to Show Jumping and Endurance.

If you contact an RDA Group about your Equine please be prepared to fill in an Equine Initial Interest Form which will ask you many questions about your horses’ temperament, health history, experience and lifestyle. Many groups will prefer to have an equine on trial to make sure they are suitable for the job.

For long term loans and purchases they will also be required to have a Pre-Purchase Examination.

Adorable 2019 Irish 12.3hh gelding, who is the dream family pony. This beautiful little chap has three lovely paces, he’s an easy ride with a great attitude and goes sweetly on the flat. Rex has hunted, on and off the lead rein, has done showjumping, showing and cross country, he’s a brilliant candidate for pony club and will go on and do any job.

He was previously ridden by children, mainly jumping, and will tolerate a less capable rider too. He isn’t bothered about colour or rustic fences, will jump from a trot or canter.

Rex is the quietest and easiest pony to hack out, he will go alone or in company, or be lead, doesn’t care about any kind of traffic and will pass the heaviest of vehicles, a complete
confidence giving pony who is fun, safe and trustworthy in every single way.

Candy is the loveliest little mare who has spent most of her life as a much-loved lead rein pony. We bought her in the summer and she has been an absolute gem for Darce, participating in a huge variety of activities including:

• XC schooling
• SJ (including pairs jumping which she loved!)
• Beach rides
• Forestry hacks
• Pony Club camp
• Shows
• Hound exercise & hunting
• Lunging while Darce was recovering from her operation

Candy has taken everything in her stride. She is happiest out hunting or hacking—ears pricked, loving life. Under saddle she’s safe and sensible, and on the lead rein she will happily follow you all day at whatever speed you can manage!

When jumping independently she just needs a few fences to get her confidence, then she gets her head in the game and off she goes. With a confident little jockey or as a lead rein pony she will thrive.
