I am tentatively looking at finding a 10 star home for our 5 year old 16.1hh purebred KFPS Registered Friesian mare (Gerben 479 x Rindert 406, grandsire Doaitsen 420).

She was graded 2nd Premie at the Keuring as a foal and has excellent breeding with a low inbreeding coefficient hard to find in Friesians so she could make an ideal broodmare in future.

She did mostly schooling and hacking in the Netherlands and she was sold as a family horse suitable for beginners. With us, she has been ridden by my 5 year old on the lead, taught a complete beginner to ride and has been ridden by very competent riders too of varying size/weight. She is very sensible and safe although did nap when she first arrived and was unsure of her surroundings (this extended to her stopping and whinnying before we moved her on).

We put her on full turnout when she arrived as a 4.5 year old (who had been stabled all her life) and introduced her to a bit of everything. Then we started a conditioning programme for endurance. It has become apparent and I have had to face the hard fact that endurance does not suit her, despite being a Sports type, and she is happiest as a hack and in a school with soft surface.

She is the most wonderful horse on the ground, so giving and loving and brilliant with children and other animals. She is a beautiful mare and wonderful to watch and admire too. Everyone comments on this. She has such a wonderful character too as she’s amazingly playful and she excels in Liberty work and bareback riding. She makes us laugh as well as gush at her beauty.

Following a 28km ride, our physio picked up on some tenderness she had in the left hind and we had it fully investigated. It turns out she has mild arthritis in her hock and so will now have remedial shoeing for this and is on anti-inflammatory treatment. Regrettably, most of our hacking, especially in winter is on roads, stone tracks, up and down long hill climbs with difficult terrain.

We are moving her to grazing by the beach for riding as her conditioning programme has been tweaked by physio but this is just a summer arrangement. I don’t want to sell her but I want the absolute best for her. I think she would be best suited to a home where there are great facilities such as a sand arena and someone who rides “little and often” as she needs daily, light exercise (not long rides on hard and stoney roads up and down hills…I am so impressed by how much she actually did of the endurance training programme before it became clear it wasn’t right for her but it just shows how willing and giving she is).

The vet has told us it is paramount that she be kept in work till the arthritis goes (it will take 6 months to 2 years according to him as she is still growing) but that this be modified so the conditioning is precise. I can envisage the best home being a one-on-one home or someone who has the time and dedication to treat her as a pampered princess (I have small children, a farm and other ponies, so she is not my one and only focus and I think she deserves to be someone’s one and only as she has the biggest, kindest heart). If such a 10 star forever home exists for her, then I would consider selling her and would want to be kept updated on her progress.

We would have to have a contract though that stipulates we could buy her back should her new owner’s circumstances change and she was to be sold (I do not want her passed around as Friesians form very loyal, special bonds). Otherwise, we will be keeping her and do our best by her.

I have added a few photos but will likely do a proper photo shoot (when not atop another horse!).

Thanks for reading! (Should someone want to see where she came from before us, the breeder’s info is here: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=3490697937821479&id=1688569448034346)

They kept her mane and forelock short but we are letting it grow back.

A very difficult/sad sale - only selling as too many horses and not enough time for her, and she deserves and loves attention and being ridden.

Perfect family horse - confidence giver - enjoys life and being ridden - nicely responsive to the leg - snaffle mouthed.

Tall horse, however high withers, so doesn't feel big and not wide - medium saddle fitting - extremely balanced horse therefore comfy!

Damaged her sesamoid ligament 10 years ago, so haven't hammered her - successfully treated through box rest and hence not jumped since - successful in Dressage to Novice level and feel deserves a gentle life not hammering competition and hasn't for last 4 years.

Loves farm rides, and happy on own, or in company even at the back, never silly, fizzy or spooky.

Good to load (lorry or trailer) clip, shoe, teeth etc. Easy to turnout on own or with others not marish and not a kicker.

Next home extremely important, as we have had her for the last 10 years.

Happy to send video on whatsapp.

Porthall Bismark is a 16hh Irish Sports Horse, 14 years old.

He is super natured animal with manners both on and off the ground.

Due to the Pandemic he has been out of work for 18 months, before then he was being used in a riding centre, trekking centre and hired out for Common Ridings/ ride outs.

We have been asked to sell this horse on behalf of the owner (a good friend) who is at present reducing her numbers and only keeping the ponies for teaching/riding lessons.

We have just started to get him going again after his break, he has been enjoying his baths and being brought back into work. My daughters and Husband have all ridden him. (See video)

Currently without shoes due to only being brought back into work, but good to shoe and etc…

Will live out in a mixed herd and happy to be out all year round if necessary.

He will ride alone and in large company, he has hunted in previous home before riding centre, ridden by all ages and abilities. He enjoys his work and thrives on being used rather than standing around. He hasn’t done much jumping but will pop a log or small fence if needed.

Bismark is lovely to deal with around the stables although we have found out that he is slightly head shy around his off side ear when small people try to tack him up. We have found that using a stool to tack him up makes the job easy.

He also is ridden without a nose band, how ever we are sure that he’d be happy with a loose cavesson nose band but he doesn’t like to feel restricted.

Prior to the pandemic he was receiving a yearly vet check for the riding school insurance which inspects his heart, eyes, soundness and general health. Never had any problems.

Sad but genuine sale of a much loved horse.

Lovely chocolate dun gelding, been turned away for some years due to an injury, was brought back into work 2 years ago and was happy hacking and light work, unfortunately work commitments meant he has been turned out for the last year and not ridden.

Fully vaccinated and feet trimmed, good doer and no vices.

He has lost his field companions over the last few months and is now on his own.

Will need bringing back into work slowly, only suitable as a companion / hack.
