Prospective purchasers of Connemara ponies should be aware that under BCPS Rules for showing – ‘No Connemara exceeding 148cm may be shown or take part in any competition restricted to Connemara or Registered Mountain and Moorland ponies within the jurisdiction of the BCPS.’
‘Where it is reported to the Society that this may have occurred then the Society may require the animal to be measured or re-measured in accordance with the Rules of the Joint Measurement Scheme -
The penalty for the contravention of the above Rule may be cancellation of the registration of the animal concerned
They should also realise that both the Irish and British Connemara Societies register ponies under a classification system. Briefly, all foals are registered as Class 3. Adult ponies (2 years and over) – Stallions and Mares – are registered in Class 1 if they pass a visual and Veterinary inspection, and as Class 2 if they fail the visual, but pass the Vet, or are over or under height, or blue eyed creams, and as Class 3 if they fail the Vet or have not been inspected
The progeny of Class 3 ponies remain in Class 3 and cannot be upgraded
