Dartmoore Mare 12.3hh has been a wonderful family member but is now a project off field

  • Great health aside hay allergy.
  • Has taught my children to ride but not consistent enough for our pony club activities.

19 year old 12.3 Dartmoor Pony (unregistered)- Tory. See loades_horsey on instagram and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s7vwRpe0xhE&t=30s (by previous owner) for all the wonderful riding videos of her but please read below for full chapter and verse. Sold off field as a project to kind home only.

Tory has been a much loved family member, was a great lead rein and at times has been a brilliant second pony but she is too much for my 3 stone slight 8 yr old daughter who is confident after much fun with Tory but lacks assertion. Therefore, we have moved on to another pony and Tory has been out of work for 10 months.

Positives - amazing to load, never refuses jumps or runs out, has been great on lead in the past, has been wonderful off lead (but see the negatives that also occur), has done everything over the years - pony club, fun rides, shows etc. Good do-er. Never been sick, lame or poorly asides hay dust.

Negatives in-hand/field - can not be left on her own at all. Can be a pain if any of 'her' herd go out by by running around for duration and would try to escape if boundaries poor. Does not handle 'interventions' by strangers (ie. as a kind familiar handler I can twitch her, put her microchip in but vet wouldn't be able - when professionals try to do do health services she stomps around with no manners and a sense of urgency likely due to genuine fear perhaps as a follow on from wild days on dartmoor when young. Even worming will make a protest), she is 'mareish' with her seasons. She is fine stabled but wouldn't trust her not to be silly in stable if another pony went out or similar (ours all go in and out at same time or can be seen.)

Negatives when ridden - can charge towards jumps too fast, if stressed over something and fizzes out she could put in a mini 'buckaroo' moment or just be v. strong, she won't stand for long periods (again depends on circumstances, sometimes she is an angel and will stay for the whole time other time she fidgets or will just decide to walk back to trailer etc), tends to get impatient and move when she decides (my slight daughter does let her to be fair). She once kicked a horse in school that came cantering up backside so did wear red ribbons for a while but has never done anything since so didn't continue. Hacking in familiar places she is great, if we take her to a new place in the open new forest where the wild ponies are then she gets het up and at the beginning I will only lead her as she will jog and feel silly. (Just to note - none of these things happen all the time - just sometimes so it can be frustrating as you may not be able to predict if she will be an absolute angel or not wishing to cooperate)

My 8 year old has only fallen off her twice ironically when Tory has pulled her forward by putting her head down to graze (she lacks manners and will do that) and when my daughter was unbalanced after a jump and not due to the ridden flaws. My daughter's riding has come on so much from 2 years of education and amazing fun on this girl. Before that she taught my older daughter on lead rein and again we have wonderful memories. Both daughters look back at the relationship with positivity of a wonderful fun pony and to them don't recall the moments which were stressful. It could well be a case that our expectations/needs for little children and inexperience is culpable for the shortcomings and that an older/more experienced home would fare better for her.

She has been great at pony club in our ownership (has done 2 x mini camps, many rallies) and more in former ownership but she her co-operation varies that i needed a more consistent steed for my girl.

I can whatsapp countless images/videos - most show the happy wonderful times and there have been COUNTLESS, just at times she can be bargey/strong/nervous of new people or being separated from a herd so I need to be honest and open so that the home is right. She will likely take a while to settle in to new surroundings.

Sold off field without tack to good caring home only - no dealers please, no inexperienced homes and nobody seeking a 1st pony. We are not desperate to sell her but perhaps someone who needs less from a pony who doesn't want to fork out a huge sum can find some of the happiness we have with her but put up with the fact that she can be testing at times and needs bringing back in.

  • Kind, genuine temperament

Milly – Uphill Amelia Fox has top class bloodlines by the renowned Crumpwell Fox Wild and sister to Uphill James Fox – HOYS Supreme winner and Uphill Freddy Fox.

She was broken to ride by Uphill Stud but has since been a broodmare. Currently in foal to what we believe to be a Hackney pony.

Wonderful pony handled by children unphased by everything. So much potential. I was hoping to bring her back to work to bring on as a child’s ridden pony but have since found out she is in foal. If anyone out there has the space to accommodate the two of them I have no question you will have a lovely mare to bring back to work. I just don’t have the grazing available to accommodate a mare and foal.

I paid just shy of £1000 three weeks ago and we have already done a lot of ground work. £500 for quick hassle free sale. No time wasters, I have devastated children at home.

Please note she has not been ridden for several years and although she is a lovely/ quiet mare who is suspect will be easy to bring back, I will only let her go to an experienced home. She deserves a shot as a ridden prospect like her close family.

NB photo taken before Fayre oaks 3 years ago. She is now in winter woolies.
