Meet Vinnie, a 4-year-old 16.2hh Irish Draught cross gelding with all the quality, temperament, and bone you’d expect from a traditional Irish type. Vinnie is a beautifully put-together bay gelding with a kind, gentle nature and a willing attitude that makes him a joy to handle and ride. Vinnie is well-schooled on the flat, riding in a soft, consistent contact with a light snaffle mouth. He works nicely in all three paces and has a naturally balanced way of going. He’s easy and uncomplicated to ride, with a calm, forgiving temperament that would suit a range of riders—including novices, mother-daughter shares, riding schools, or even trekking centres looking for a safe, steady horse to add to their string.

Vinnie is a true allrounder, he would make a lovely riding club horse. He’s also an extremely honest and genuine jumper. Vinnie has schooled confidently up to 90cm over both coloured poles and cross-country fences. Out on the course, he takes everything in stride—ditches, drains, banks, coffins, water—he jumps it all with a brave and willing heart. One of the main issues that RDA groups face is finding an Equine to suit the needs of the participants in their group.

We are regularly contacted with offers of Equines that are ‘the ideal RDA horse or pony’ when actually what is ideal for one group may not be for the next. We are trying to move away from the stereotypical view that RDA Equines are elderly and somewhat static, our horses and ponies need to be fit, healthy and athletic to cope with the lifestyle in an RDA group.

They can range from smaller, forward going ponies to weight carrying cobs and can take part in a range of disciplines from Riding to Carriage Driving, Vaulting to Show Jumping and Endurance.

If you contact an RDA Group about your Equine please be prepared to fill in an Equine Initial Interest Form which will ask you many questions about your horses’ temperament, health history, experience and lifestyle. Many groups will prefer to have an equine on trial to make sure they are suitable for the job.

For long term loans and purchases they will also be required to have a Pre-Purchase Examination.
