Their distinctive light, efficient build and ability to thrive in extreme heat and long-distances have made them historically valued as endurance horses. If you talk to any farrier they can tell you how trimming these types of horses can be like cutting into a rock cake. Modern sport riders appreciate them for their athleticism, rideability, and striking metallic appearance. An example of this is by Sergei Filatov, who rode the Akhal-Teke stallion Absent which won the individual dressage gold at the 1960 Rome Olympics, marking the Soviet Union’s first Olympic gold in the discipline.
